Aflac’s accidental injury insurance helps cover a wide span of events, from emergency situations to more common accidents. On one side of the spectrum, we provide coverage for burns, comas, paralysis, concussions, dislocations, and lacerations. While crisis injuries can occur, there are a laundry list of common injuries that need attention too. Aflac also helps cover fractures, broken teeth, eye injuries, and pain management, like epidurals.
There are many additional costs on top of treating the injury that may not be covered under your primary medical coverage. Aflac can help pay for ambulance trips, physical therapy, CT Scans, MRIs, confinement, blood transfusions, and medical appliances.
When a accident occurs, there can be a great deal of treatment fees that exist outside of hospital bills. Aflac pays you cash benefits directly (unless assigned), which can be used for any of these services:
Monte has a standard health insurance plan with a $500 deductible. He has a small cushion in his bank account saved for a rainy day. He considers himself a graceful guy but found himself tripping and tumbling down a flight of stairs, breaking his leg. After an ambulance picked him up and performed a few tests, the doctor recommended 3 months of physical therapy.
His total medical expenses came out to $7,274.2 After filing a claim with his initial insurance, he still owes over $2,910.† With Aflac’s accident plan, Monte receives $2,4353 in cash benefits to help lower that burden. Aflac’s personal injury insurance helps Monte keep his rainy-day fund looking sunny.
Accident and health insurance are different. While major health insurance is necessary, our accident policy is optional. Our voluntary accident insurance pays cash benefits when an emergency injury occurs.
Our accident policies pays benefits for hazardous activities like skydiving, rock climbing, and parachuting. However, if the accident puts you out of work for an extended period, we recommend our short term disability insurance policy.
We know that sporting injuries like concussions are common and take strides to help cover you. However, if your accident results in life-changing heart attacks or strokes, our critical illness insurance policy would be a better fit. This route utilizes lump sum payments.
What about accidents while traveling? Our plan will help cover transportation costs, hospital fees, and other medical expenses incurred during travel accidents. It will not pay benefits for bacterial, viral, microorganism infections, or any condition resulting from insect bites or stings. For an in-depth understanding of what isn’t covered, explore the limitations and exclusions in your policy.
Accidents happen, big or small, and always at the wrong time. No warning, no time beforehand to reallocate funds, but a surprise injury with a hefty price tag.
So, if you’re pondering, “do I need accident insurance?” we encourage you to look at the premiums on your current health insurance plan. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation 2020 Employer Health Benefit Survey, average single and family premiums increased 4% in the past year. This has skewed average family coverage up 22% in the last 5 years.7
Having an added layer of supplemental accident insurance can help fill the holes that your primary insurance may be missing.
If the accident takes a turn for the worst, financial stressors shouldn’t consume you. Aflac’s Accidental-Death Benefit Rider provides accidental death benefits with varying cash payouts for your spouse and children. This may help keep your family afloat while grieving. If you are concerned about losing a family member, we encourage you to look at our life insurance policies.
Accident insurance costs are low, especially when you factor in the long-term savings. You can opt into an accident policy that provides weekly coverage for less than the cost of a box of bandages! You can spend the same amount per week on an accident policy as you do household first aid.
